29th - Sneak has heard that the Lennox (more recently the 3TO 'night club) is been sold to developers. Looks like the Castle will have a large number of potential customers on the otherside of the road.
28th - Sneak was thinking about the Shovels again today. If one of these pubs can do it why can't others? Could it be something to do with the landlord? Someone who cares for the cellar rather than someone who just wants to make money out of selling anything that is wet and people will buy.
27th - Sneak has found the most superb pub. Lets start with the bad part ... it's a large roadside Steak & Ale house ... the sort of pub that you wouldn't stop at ... but wait a minute there is a beer festival. Eighty (yes 80) different British Ales, Sneak didn't recognise half the breweries and of those he did didn't recognise half of the beers on sale. And the food was good as well. So if you are passing drop into the Shovels its very close to Blackpool Airport.
22nd - Sneak visited Twickenham Beer Festival today. After Worthing's magnificent display of beers Sneak was slightly disappointed with the 30 or so on at Twickenham. But all was not lost, at 5pm 15 more beers came on including one (from Grand Onion) that had been hoisted to the scaffolding, vented and tapped only two hours before. Sneak wished he knew how this was done.
18th - Cleaning pipes is an important part of running a good public house. Sneak thinks that six months is a bit of a long time between cleans.
16th - Sneak heard from Herr Webmeister today. Seems he was lucky enought ot get to the CAMRA Awards Dinner (which nearly became tea as it went on until nearly 7). Many fine beers were drunk including most of the CBoBs. Sneak understands that one of the best bits was the Headcracker Ice Cream (...) and the five bottles of Young's GBG that 'sneaked' out with him!
14th - Nobody has replied to Sneak's latest competition. So Sneak will drink the prize himself. The answer of course was the Jolly Greene Giant's IPA. The descriptions from the GBG 2001 (1) and 2004 (2). Must be a new recipe!
13th - Sneak has a 'zen type' question for the lawyers out there: "Is it libel if it's true?"
12th - Sneak had to laugh. Seems Eastbourne Council (who at least support the beer festival better than Worthing BC - but don't get Sneak on about WBC) has been ringing round pubs trying to sell the un-used beer (there must be a lot for them to call as far as Worthing). Guess whoever was over from Worthing on the Friday night caused a few problems.
9th - Sneak has learned of a planning application for the Wig & Pen. While Sneak has lived in Worthing for a few years now but has never visited this establishment, maybe never will now. But seriously should you be in the neighbourhood sign the petition to stop another pub being knocked into flats.
8th - Sneak attended Worthing's very own beer festival. Smashing it was. Sneak even appreciated the Teville Gate referencing Dark Star beer specially produced for the festival. Oh and thanks to whoever went to Eastbourne and set the fire alarms off.
3rd - October's Quiz can you identify these two beers from GBGs
1. Bland session bitter with some hops on the nose and a slightly astringent aftertaste.
2. Light uncomplicated session bitter copper-coloured with a subtle malty nose and just a hint of hops. a light bitter introduction with sweetish malty undertones give a refreshing, lemonade type feel. a long tapering finish turns dryer and increases in bitterness.
Answers to Sneak by the 14th.
2nd - A lovely pint of Harvey's Old was to be had. Sneak won't tell where as it's all gone now. But then again it may be coming back.
Email the local branch for more information.
