Sneak's Eyes Only Blog

September 2004

27th - Sneak appears to have been asleep through part of 2004. Sussex Brewery (AKA Forge, Old Forge or Pett) has closed. Oh well never get to try their beers now.

23rd- Sneak has been looking through the GB05 and decided to have a competition. Anyone emailing Sneak with the answer to the following questions will be bought a pint at WBF8. 1) Apart from Fuller's LP and Harvey's Sussex what other beer is on the cover of GBG04. 2) Exactly how many mistakes are there in the GBG05? Answers to the usual address.

15th - Sneak has just received his copy of the Good Beer Guide 2005 (OK its a little early but that is how things work in the publishing trade - you print reviews of things that are six months out of date and put them in a book/magazine with next years date on it). Sneak, however, is not concerned with that. Try opening it, you'll have to snap the spin to read the middle bits! And (you know how finicky Sneak is) the first thing Sneak looked up was wrong! Check out the Burton Bridge "Thomas Sykes" a OG of 1095 and an ABV of 5% - sweet!

11th - Sneak had his all 'time' worst experience [or is that record] of queing in the "Sir Tim". Twenty-five minutes. Might not be so bad but only four people were served before Sneak and there were two staff serving behind the bar. In fact Sneak is lost for words [for a change].

4th - Sneak has often wondered (to himself) about the Blandford (Dorset) brewed 'King & Barnes' Sussex. CAMRA has enough problems with Badger over this (and their destruction of the brewery in Horsham), but recently Sneak has noticed a trend for Badger pubs to display Thirsty Ferret as a guest ale! Would this be the same Thirsty Ferret that was brewed at the Gribble (a Badger pub but an Independent brewery) before brewing was transferred to a certain Blandford brewery?

3rd - At last Gales seem to be doing something with the Woodman Arms (though they still haven't replied to any emails). Looks like the pub is being built from the ground upwards. Plans to open in early 2005 are advertised.

August 2004

27th - Sneak is going to mention the Selden. Hasn't been done for a week or two so Sneak thought it was about time!

23rd - Sneak was dragged into Eden by a couple of people (ok female and 20 years younger) and was please to see SIX handpumps. Ok there was no pump clips and the manager said the owners wanted to put on real ale - but he thought it was a bit difficult to keep. Watch this space - possibly.

18th - Sneak decided to do a little preaching (quietly of course). While on holiday he found the pub landlord of the Britannia to be very amenable, but with the large heads on the beer (caused by the tight sparkers). Sneak was not his usual self. However, said landlord was happy to remove the sparkler, and because Sneak was such a regular visitor by the end of the week everyone was drinking "flat" beer. One can hope it stays that way.

9th - Sneak has gone away.

6th - Sneak understands that hot on the heals of its second place at CBOB the Jolly Green Giant is to issue new pump clips to all the pubs that serve its IPA. Regardless of how well kept it is, of course.

5th - Sneak has a headache - self induced of course. Anyone who can tell Sneak what happened to Sneak at GBBF will be awarded a prize. Answers to the usual address

4th - Sneak has picked up a copy of the Sussex Drunkyard, at the Slaughtered Lamb on his way to GBBF. Issue 17 (what happened to the first 16 issues?) of the CAMPUB (or Campaign for the Proper Use of Beer). A touching tribute to the old SD, included are Hair'ov the Dog, and pub scratchings. Sneak hopes the lads (A, B and V as well as the number 8.6 - [get it?]) produce another one but feels the copy deadline of 2011 (13th June) is a little far away. Channel Five have a lot to answer for ...

3rd - Sneak is heading off to GBBF tomorrow and was grateful for not buying his CBOB tasting panel in advance! As some will be aware, the Champion Beer of Britain is a prestigious event the winner getting a lot of publicity, however, this year the Number 2 slot has taken the controversy one step further. Sneak has always berated the Jolly Greene Giant and now it takes the Silver medal at GBBF for what it terms its IPA - a beer Sneak has consistently avoided. Guess Sneak will have to have a chat with the beer selection committee to see if they can get it for Worthing. Just kidding.

1st - Last months competition is now over. Sneak would like to announce the winner but nobody responded. Perhaps the next one will get a bit better supported

Email the local branch for more information.
