CAMRA is an independent, voluntary, consumer organisation. Membership is open to all individuals, but corporate entities such as breweries and pubs are not members. CAMRA is governed by a voluntary unpaid national executive, elected by the membership. There is a small professional staff of fourteen responsible for central campaigning, research, administration of membership, sales and so forth. The Great British Beer Festival as well as many local festivals are organised. Formed in 1980 to represent the interests of the emerging new wave of microbrewers, it was originally named the Small Independent Brewers Association. This name was changed in 1995 when members decided they wanted to get away from all the connotations associated with the word 'small'. SIBA has one simple function:- "To campaign on behalf of craft brewers to ensure that they have the best possible opportunity to bring their goods to the market." After the growth in cask ale sales in the U.K. in the 70's and 80's, helped and supported by CAMRA, the 90's have seen a reverse in this trend. Many explanations have been put forward, but our research shows (see section Why Cask Marque?) that quality is a key issue. We need both to retain the traditional cask ale drinker as well as attracting new younger drinkers to this sector. This can only be achieved by raising standards and delivering to the consumer a cool, refreshing and consistent pint every time.
To improve the quality of cask ale at the point of dispense by awarding a nationally recognised and respected Marque to the licensee when quality standards have been met. This should achieve the following :
. Provide an objective measurement of standards to help retailers and brewers improve quality and focus on training and investment more objectively.
. To raise customer awareness of quality standards.
