Selden Arms

41 Lyndhurst Road, BN11 2DB [This link opens in a new window]

Indepentant Free House

Dark Star Hophead; Ringwood 49er; and four Guest Beers (usually from small and micro brewers and nearly always a dark ale)

This smallish local is a genuine free house, with six excellent ales being served, and has a very loyal following.

The Selden Arms dates back to at least 1869. It was winner of the local branch Pub of the Year 2009 and runner up in 2008. The 'Selden' was also Pub of the Year (under the same owners) in 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002 and 2000 and was runner-up and Town Pub of the Year in 2001.

The Selden has photographs of Worthing pubs, old and new(ish), on display. Over 1,000 different real ales (as January 2009) have been served since the current owners arrived in 1998. One of the hand pumps is usually reserved for a dark beer (could be a mild, stout, old or porter).  Real cider and a range of Belgium bottled beers are stocked. Excellent lunchtime food (value and quantity) is served Monday to Saturday. One German lager, a Belgium Kriek, Leffe Blonde or wheat beer as well as up to three ciders are also on draught (a Perry is available sometimes and a Pider has been seen occassionally). Music every other Wednesday. A small beer festival is arranged towards the end of January. (Photgraphs of the inside).

"Superb beer, the best pub in the area."

One sunny Sunday, passing early in the morning we were lucky enough to be allowed to photograph the pub interior.
