Thanks

Firstly, a big thanks to those people who contribute to the updating of the guide. Special thanks to branch members who regularly visit some of the unstarred pubs (rather than those with 3*) to check to see if things have changed. Thanks also to the Quaffer for the use of some of his words. If you see a copy of "The Quaffer" about I suggest you pick it up and read it. Now on with "how to ...".

Star Ratings

A number of pubs have a STAR rating. These ratings are based on the quality of the beer and over many visits . No landlord, pub company or individual pays for inclusion in the guide or their STAR rating. One star ( * ) means the pub serves good real ale, two stars ( **) means the pub serves excellent real ale in good surroundings, three stars ( *** ) mean the pub should be in the Good Beer Guide as one of the top pubs in the area. Just because a pub does not have a star doesn't mean that you shouldn't try it. It maybe a hidden gem.

Good Beer Guide Listings

Good Beer Guide listed pubs are included for years 2002 onwards. Additionally, some pubs have quotes at the end of the description - these are personal comments taken from individual surveyors. If you are interested in the Good Beer Guide entries as a whole click here.

Opening Hours

Pub opening hours are given where known. However, since the advent of all-day opening, and with the relaxation of opening hours, it has become impossible to keep track of opening times. There are, however, some general rules:

Country pubs usually close during the afternoon, particularly in winter and during the week, some open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in summer, but this will generally depend on trade. Afternoon closing is usually between 2.30 and 3.30, with reopening between 5.30 and 6.30 (7 on Sundays).

Town Pubs are mostly now open all day, however, those in more residential areas may close during the afternoon during the week.

Locations

The pubs in this Guide are located by the main town, village or district for ease of access. Each location has a geographical locator for the branch. N for north and S for south of the Downs , then a second code indicating E ast, W est or C entral. Each pub also has a short description of how to reach it. OS references are included for all but town centre pubs.

The maps on these pages are provided by a link to Streetmap. Arun & Adur Branch are grateful for this service, but we do not endorse in any way any of the organisations that advertise on the Streetmap site. Nor can we be held responsible for the Streetmap site.

Please also note the maps are based on postcodes, so sometimes the circle is a little way from the pub (it could be on the wronf side of the road). But if you get to the circle you'll either be able to see or have walked past the pub).

Food

Food is a major part of trade for almost all country pubs. This can range from gourmet meals in restaurants to basic bar snacks. Food is normally available in the early evening as well as at lunchtime, particularly in summer, although watch out for Sunday evening when many kitchens are closed, and Monday which may be a staff rest day.

Beer Prices

West Sussex as a whole is not a cheap area in which to drink. As a general rule expect to pay between £1.80 and £2.60 for an average session bitter (Harveys Sussex for example) adding perhaps up-to 30p for a premium bitter (Summer Lightening). Country pubs may charge more, however, there is trend, with the price wars generated by the advent of Wetherspoons and some other pub chains to bring prices down in the centre of towns. There is also a trend to charge much more, one pub is charging £2.90 for a pint of London Pride - and it is not a special pub by any stretch or the imagination!

Drinking and Driving

Arun & Adur CAMRA do not encourage you to drive to pubs unless you have a designated driver. Do not drink and drive - use public transport or your own two feet. Stagecoach Coastline (buses) can be contacted on 08457 121 0170 or email. Train information is available from Nationalrail or 08457 48 49 50.

Remember: Every year 3,000 people are killed or seriously injured by drink-drivers and 85,000 are convicted for drink-driving offences - don't be one of them.
