Number One Bus Crawl

A crawl that can be done by car but is best done by bus.

You can start from anywhere on the Number One bus route (Midhurst to Worthing) but it is usually better to start at one end or the other. Petworth is a good starting point and a Number One bus leaves Worthing to get you there for about 12.15 (please check the times of the buses before traveling and make sure you know the time of the last bus back).

In Petworth there is the Star, a Fullers pub, and virtually the only pub in Petworth that has not been turned into an antique shop! The drop off and pick up stop in Petworth is the same place so a quick pint in the Star means you can catch the same bus coming back from Midhurst.

As the bus drops down out of Petworth and then starts to climb the hill again there is a sharp left hand bend, make sure the driver knows you want to get off at the next stop as it is just a concrete post (no bus stop sign). Walk back about 30 meters to the turn to Byworth and 100 meters down there is the super Black Horse. Returning to the roadside await the next bus heading back to Worthing.

The next stop is also unmarked. But it is just past Stopham Bridge (it is actual by the entrance to a garden center). Again a short walk back the way you came and cross over the road down to the old bridge and the White Hart. A great pub with a small bar but many rooms leading off it.

Returning to the 'bus stop' await the next bus. Through Pulborough and on to Mare Hill where this time the bus stop is outside the excellent White Horse (converted from a free house to Fullers in Feb 2005). Again another pub that has an emphasis on food but still has an excellent bar area and real ales.

Further stops along the Number One bus route include Smock Alley and the Five Bells, but this is about a ten minute walk from the bus stop.

We'll gloss over Storrington and follow the bus back to the delights of Findon, or just carry on to Worthing.

"Whatever you do enjoy it!"
